They find nitrogen on Mars

During the field rounds of the Curiosity Rover, NASA scientists managed to identify nitrogen in a sample of the so-called Red Planet.

According to data released by the special organization, the sample was collected on the surface. Several amounts of nitrogen were found in some rocks from the surface of the planet Mars, reports the National Autonomous University of Mexico, which participated in the investigation.

The inspection was carried out in the Gale crater, where the robot found nitrates in different proportions and quantities, which decreases due to the atmospheric variations the planet has gone through.

"We can see that the lower strata, which correspond to the oldest, nitrate concentrations are higher, but as the robot emerges, these concentrations decrease," the scientist said.

Nitrates refer to it at a previous moment, the atmosphere was at a time rich in hydrogen. But over time, "that hydrogen is decreasing". The scientist He attributed the formation of these nitrates to "asteroid collisions" that remained in the planet's atmosphere. It may be due to ultraviolet light or even lightning, a phenomenon that does not currently occur on Mars.

"As time went on, there was less hydrogen and it could have created the extinction of life on Mars," he said. The decrease can be attributed to the passage of time over millions of years.

The purpose of the Curiosity Rover was to conduct a thorough study of the Red Planet's past to understand what happened to the existence of life. While space scientist Jennifer Stern said during her participation in the conference that a kind of form that could store information like DNA, this solid nitrogen needed.

Curiosity traveled 12 kilometers in his years of service in 6 years, drilling 17 drills analyzed by the Monster Analyzer on Mars that has it in its interior. This would be the main discovery of his "career as a space researcher".
