The US retail industry is undergoing a large-scale revolution that has led to record-high rates bankruptcies and shop closing over the past few years.

Amidst these losses, some retailers are flourishing and continue to follow physical growth strategies, with at least one – Dollar General – planning to add nearly 1,000 stores.


Many of the retailers starting new stores in 2019 are discounters, including Dollar General. Dollar Tree, Aldi, and TJ Maxx.

Other companies that add stores include target, Walmart, Costco, and Full foods. Some, such as Kohl's and Abercrombie & Fitch, plan to close as many stores as they open.


Overall, retailers are planning to open more than 2,000 new stores this year, according to a business insider analysis based on company data.
